Hank Gowdy Chapter Meeting (Columbus, OH)

The SABR Hank Gowdy Chapter's spring meeting will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the Westerville Public Library located at 126 S State St, Westerville, OH 43081.

We have arranged for a great lineup of speakers who will discuss a wide range of baseball topics. There will also be time for a book raffle, challenging trivia contest, mock Hall of Fame balloting and your predictions for the 2018 baseball season. We are pleased to announce our guest speaker is Dan Szymborski, a writer for ESPN.com/ESPN Insider and the developer of the Zips projection system, a computer-based system for projecting baseball performance. The meeting agenda, including presenters and their topics, is as follows:

  • 9:15 Jim Leeke - "Moose and Eddie: Harry McCormick and Edward Grant in the Great War."
  • 9:45 Dr. Charles C. Alexander - "The Half Game Pennant Race."
  • 10:15 Break/Book Raffle #1*
  • 10:30 Guest Speaker -- Dan Szymborski (ESPN.com/ESPN Insider) - "Sabermetrics and Collusion in a Post-Moneyball World."
  • 11:15 Trivia Contest - By Chris Gallutia.
  • 11:45 Break/Book Raffle #2*
  • 12:00 Scott Longert - "Cry Babies and the 1940 Pennant Race."
  • 12:30 Hall of Fame Vote/2018 MLB Season Predictions.
  • 1:00 Adjourn/Lunch w/fellow members and guests at a local favorite.

*Don't forget to bring a book to donate to the book raffle.

Several of our speakers are authors of excellent baseball books. If you have one or more of their books, feel free to ask them to sign them. Some books may be available at the session for purchase and signing.

As usual, the chapter will provide sweet rolls. Please bring your own coffee, juice or bottled water, or purchase at the library booth in the main lobby.
