| Does Baseball Deserve Its Black Eye? |
| By The SABR Office |
SABR is pleased to present a provocative new article by acclaimed baseball historian Norman Macht. Entitled “Does Baseball Deserve Its Black Eye?”, Macht dissents from the conventional wisdom that then-baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis was the major obstacle to the integration of major league baseball. In a year in which America has inaugurated its first African American president, the discussion of race and racism in our country has been renewed. Macht’s article adds to this conversation by reminding us that it is only too easy to place blame for injustices on certain individuals rather than examining the historical and social contexts in which they operated.
Download the article (PDF) here.
Macht’s article will be published in The Baseball Research Journal, which will be mailed to SABR members in late June. However, in conjunction with the Civil Rights Game on June 20, SABR is making the article available here as a free download in PDF format. The full text of Macht’s article is included as well as short responses from baseball historians Richard Crepeau and Lee Lowenfish. We hope you enjoy it.
