“Cannonball” Jackman and New England Negro League Research to Resume

BOSTON, MA – The Cannonball Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is forming to build upon Dick Thompson’s research into Will “Cannonball” Jackman and other African American players and teams who played in New England from the late 1800’s through World War II.

“This is a fascinating and important subject” said Red Sox President and Chief Executive Officer, Larry Lucchino.

The late Dick Thompson had researched “Cannonball” Jackman’s career for more than four years. He compiled close to three hundred wins for Jackman but believed there were many more in newspaper box scores throughout New England.

“We believe it is time to create a permanent exhibit honoring the New England Negro Leaguers like Jackman and Charles “Power Hitter” Lloyd along with the other numerous African American teams and players that displayed their baseball prowess and grittiness on New England’s diamonds,” said founder and Executive Director Michael Ginns. “A great deal of Mr. Thompson’s research is set to be auctioned soon, and we hope to be the high bidder. It would be a major set back to our organizations research and scholarship initiatives if we do not win.”

The Cannonball Foundation is also creating a scholarship fund in honor of Mr. Thompson to benefit inner city youth and inner city organizations dedicated to bringing baseball to kids in the inner city.

Information about The Cannonball Foundation can be viewed at their website, www.thecannonballfoundation.org.

The Cannonball Foundation is in the process of filing the necessary paperwork to become an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) organization. If you would like to donate or volunteer, please contact Executive Director Michael Ginns.
