Fifty-two people, including SABR members and guests, attended the Bob Broeg SABR Chapter’s annual Hot Stove luncheon on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Mike Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood in downtown St. Louis.
At the meeting’s outset, chapter president Norm Richards asked for a moment of silence for the fallen U.S. soldiers who had been killed in the Iraq War and Afghanistan. A parade to honor local veterans began at noon that day, and passed the restaurant.
Chapter member Joan Thomas received the Bob Broeg Service Award for her leadership in the chapter’s project to mark five St. Louis sites that once housed major league ballparks.
Guest speakers included former Cardinals outfielder Kerry Robinson and his father, Rogers Robinson, who played in the Cardinals’ minor league system. Each discussed his career and handled an array of questions from the audience. Pat Daly, manager of Cardinals retail sales, described how the club authenticates potential souvenirs and collectors’ items. Derrick Goold, one of the reporters covering baseball for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and a guest at past Bob Broeg chapter events, discussed off-season player moves by the Cardinals.
Research presentations came from chapter members Jim Rygelski, “Baseball Myths: Old and New,” and Dwayne Isgrig, “The Great Bambino and His Three Home Runs in One World Series (Twice).” Read the prepared text of Rygelski's presentation here and Isgrig's presentation here.
Chapter member Mark Stangl won the trivia quiz compiled by chapter member Robert Tiemann. The quiz was on Cardinals, and some Cubs, accomplishments in the postseason. Stangl got 85 of a possible 105 points. Three other guests tied for second at 43. All received baseball books or photos as prizes.
By voice vote and without dissent, the membership approved the following people for officers and board of directors: president, Norm Richards; vice president, Brian Flaspohler; secretary, Jim Rygelski; treasurer, Fred Heger. Board members: Jeff Ecker, Steve Gietschier, Wayne Hebden, Jim Leefers, Kris Lokemoen, John Schoon, Barbara Sheinbein, Mark Stangl, and Bob Tiemann.
