Turnstyle is the journal of baseball arts and literature produced by SABR’s Baseball and the Arts Research Committee. Although SABR is known for publishing baseball history, biographical research, and statistical analysis, in Turnstyle we get to see the more artistic side of baseball, through poetry, short stories, and creative nonfiction, as well as paintings, illustrations, and interviews with artists.

In this issue we have several poems with baseball cards as their theme, including one from Jason A. Schwartz with cards embedded, and even some of the “found poetry” of the late Jerry Remy, curated and shaped by Eric Poulin. There are also reminiscent essays by Steve Ginader, Adam Young, and Bryan Steverson, short stories from Cesar Love and Stanley Enzweiler, and an interview with artist and historian Gary Cieradkowski, along with many other literary delights. 

The first issue of Turnstyle in 2019 interspersed contemporary creations by SABR members with examples of baseball literature from the past, while Issue 2 in 2020 was filled entirely with contemporary works. Issue 3 in 2023 included poems, photos, paintings, and essays on baseball away from the ballpark.

Turnstyle is the journal of baseball arts and literature produced by SABR’s Baseball and the Arts Research Committee. The long-awaited third issue is now available for all to enjoy. Featuring over 20 poems, and over 40 total pieces of fiction and creative essays, the issue also includes over 40 original photographs, paintings, and illustrations.

Following in the tradition of publications such as Elysian Fields Quarterly, The Minneapolis Review of Baseball, and Spitball, Turnstyle continues the tradition of sharing baseball literature, artwork, and imagery. Writers, artists, poets, photographers, and others participate in and reflect on baseball and the arts. The first issue of Turnstyle interspersed contemporary creations by SABR members with examples of baseball literature from the past, while Issue 2 was filled entirely with contemporary works. With Issue 3, the number of submissions was so voluminous that work on Issue 4 has already begun!

For many of us, the spectre of COVID-19 meant that attending baseball games was not an option; solitude and quarantine became the norm. During the pandemic, a great number of SABR bards, biographers, photographers, memoirists, storytellers, and artists put pen to paper, brush to canvas, and fingers to keyboard. May we now enjoy the fruits of their labors.

This issue includes poems by Kalwinder Singh Dhindsa and Ron Kaplan, essays by Margie Lawrence, Norman L. Macht, and George Skornickel, paintings by Paul Borelli, Adam Korengold, and David Holden, and a photo essay on Hinchliffe Stadium by Donna Muscarella, along with many additional contributions by John Jakicic, Joey Nicoletti, Richard M. Campbell Jr., Dick Butler, Francis Kinlaw, John L. Green, Gabriel Bogart, Matthew Perry, Peter M. Gordon, George Skornickel, Joseph Stanton, William B. Turnstyle is the journal of baseball arts and literature produced by SABR’s Baseball and the Arts Research Committee. Turnstyle combines poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction with baseball-themed art and illustration. 

In Issue 2, we have an exploration of the art of Joaquin Newman, an Oakland-based artist who combined the Mexican tradition of calaveras (skeleton paintings for Day of the Dead) with baseball cards for a series of paintings, one of which graces the issue’s front cover. Andrea Long writes about how baseball connected her with her father, even after his passing, and George Skornickel looks back on a special Opening Day he shared with his mother when he was young.

Several writers referenced the trying circumstances of the 2020 pandemic, including Bill Nowlin’s closing essay about the unique wait for Opening Day. Anika Orrock brings us a lively, and true, story of a nun who played baseball, while three members of the Moonlight Graham Society recount how each of them made their sole appearance in a professional game, a la the society’s namesake. In “Ninth Inning,” writer Bradley Stribling gives us a fictionalized account of a real game: a 1925 match between a Negro League baseball team and a Ku Klux Klan team, while Bryan Erwin sends us deep into the gut-churning moral dilemma of a player whose split-second decision on the field may have far-reaching consequences in “The Spoiler.”

Thirty-six pieces in all fill the pages of Issue 2, including a baker’s dozen poems, a dozen articles and autobiographical essays, seven stories, and more than a dozen paintings and illustrations.

Turnstyle is the new journal of art and literature put together by SABR’s Baseball and the Arts Committee.

As editors Joanne Hulbert and Jay Hurd write in their introduction to this inaugural issue, in its pages “your eyes will behold the work of many SABR writers and artists who find inspiration in the romance, mythology, history, and discipline that baseball offers. We do not in any way intend to duplicate the great work of other literary baseball journals. Rather we embrace the legacy those journals have bequeathed to us; we are encouraged to continue what has been an integral part of baseball—the art and literature dedicated to the game.”

In addition to poems, short stories, and articles, the pages are adorned with some of the art from Cuban illustrator and artist Andez. Sprinkled throughout readers will be delighted to find cartoons and excerpts from 19th century newspapers and writing on baseball, including satire from Henry Guy Carleton, Hugh E. Keough, and Marcus “Brick” Pomeroy.
