The Cape Cod League is the premier amateur baseball league in the United States, and this book presents stories of the people, places, and players who have made it great.

If someone told you an amateur baseball league had produced 18 future major leaguers, it might seem impressive. But over 1,800 alumni of the Cape Cod Baseball League have landed in the major leagues. The “Cape League,” as it is locally known, is far from the only collegiate summer baseball league—over 80 now operate in the US and Canada—but it is the only one to graduate so many players into the bigs. Perhaps just as impressive is how the league was born of, and remains nurtured by, a true community of volunteers rooted in Massachusetts and on Cape Cod.

Every night in the summer months, a small army of volunteers staff several games a night, which are free and open to the public. Volunteers run all ten teams, from the coaches and groundskeepers to the folks running concessions and selling raffle tickets. Many gameday workers are interns who themselves go on to futures in professional baseball scouting, broadcasting, and team operations. On the Cape, players typically stay with host families, sometimes working in family shops or other local businesses, making the Cape League experience truly community based for all.

This book takes a comprehensive look at the Cape Cod Baseball League as only SABR can, encompassing both analytical articles on the importance of the league in MLB development and historical pieces documenting the past and present. Biographies of some important figures in Cape League history, such as longtime president Judy Walden Scarafile, and profiles of alumni such as Derek Falvey, recently president of the Minnesota Twins, sit alongside analysis and features on each team, from the Cotuit Kettleers to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

Some 25 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and a number of invited guests offer here some of their experiences and perspectives. Former Los Angeles Dodgers GM Dan Evans called his work on the Cape as “the greatest scouting experience of my life.” Peter Gammons now lives on Cape Cod, but still enthuses about being “lucky enough to go to a Cape League game” and in his foreword to the book reminisces about seeing a player he’s never forgotten, embodying the league’s motto: “Where the stars of tomorrow shine tonight.”

About the SABR Digital Library

For more than 50 years, SABR and its members have led the way in publishing the best baseball historical and statistical research. Our publications program is shifting to take advantage of new methods of publishing. Not only will we continue to publish new books like Can He Play? A Look At Baseball Scouts and Their Profession (2011); Inventing Baseball: The 100 Greatest Games of the 19th Century (2013); Scandal on the South Side: The 1919 Chicago White Sox (2015); Jackie Robinson: Perspectives on 42 (2021), ¡Arriba!
Twenty-five years ago, the Seattle Mariners had a magical season and pennant fever gripped the Pacific Northwest. This SABR Digital Library book collects biographies of every player on the 2001 roster and looks back at key games and moments in their record-setting run—a 116-win season, the best in American League history. Their penchant for comeback victories inspired the catchphrase: “Two Outs, So What!”

The M’s built a large division lead early and never let up. Just as they were about to clinch the AL West Division title, the 9/11 terrorist attacks shocked the nation and interrupted the season. When play resumed a week later, they clinched in front of an emotional Safeco Field crowd.

The offensive attack started with Ichiro Suzuki, a Japanese sensation who posted a historic rookie season. His MVP campaign overshadowed a career year by teammate Bret Boone, who finished third in the MVP voting. The lineup also boasted future Hall of Famer Edgar Martínez, five-tool center fielder Mike Cameron, and steady first baseman John Olerud, all of whom enjoyed All-Star seasons.

The 2001 Seattle Mariners were arguably as well-rounded as any team in major-league history. The roster, constructed by general manager Pat Gillick and piloted by Lou Piniella, dominated the opposition in every facet of the game. The M’s scored more runs than any other team, allowed the fewest, and led the majors in ERA, OBP, and stolen bases. The resulting 116 regular-season wins tied the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the most wins in a single season.

Seattle’s pitching staff featured soft-tossing southpaw Jamie Moyer, who won 20 games, while a young workhorse named Freddy García produced an All-Star campaign. Out of the bullpen, Arthur Rhodes, Jeff Nelson, and Kazuhiro Sasaki were nearly flawless in the late innings.

Although Seattle fell short of winning the American League pennant, losing to the New York Yankees in the ALCS, the 2001 Mariners and their historic season maintain a special place in the hearts of a long-suffering fan base. This book, released on the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Mariners, represents a collaborative effort of more than 50 SABR members.

“Trying to throw a fastball past Henry Aaron is like trying to sneak a sunrise past a rooster.” — Curt Simmons, pitcher

Henry Aaron is one of the greatest baseball players of all time, a great humanitarian, and a deserving subject for this in-depth examination of his life and his impact on baseball and the world. This SABR book includes twenty essays examining Aaron’s life and career as well as over a dozen detailed recaps revisiting significant games in which he played, from his debut in 1952 to his first grand slam with the Braves to his curtain call in Milwaukee in 1976.

Born in 1934, one of eight siblings, Aaron first joined the ranks of professional baseball players as a member of the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League. He would eventually play 23 years in the National League, and win three Gold Gloves, one MVP award, and the 1957 World Series with the Milwaukee Braves. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982, his first ballot, and to MLB’s All Century Team in 1999. Among his many career highlights, on May 17, 1970, Aaron became the first player to compile both 3,000 career hits and more than 500 homers.

But the moment that lives indelibly in baseball history took place on April 8, 1974, when he broke Babe Ruth’s previously unassailable career record of 714 home runs. As Aaron circled the bases, broadcaster Vin Scully told his audience, “What a marvelous moment for baseball. What a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia. What a marvelous moment for the country and the world. A Black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol.” Hate mail by the bagful followed Aaron during his quest to hit 715 career home runs and pass the legendary Babe Ruth. “Hammerin’ Hank” responded with class and a beautiful line-drive swing. He retired with 755 home runs, a .305 batting average, .555 slugging percentage, and .928 OPS.

This book represents the collaborative effort of 40 members of SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research.

Native American Major Leaguers
Associate editors: Len Levin and Carl Riechers
ISBN (ebook): 978-1-960819-48-2, $9.99
ISBN (paperback): 978-1-960819-49-9, $34.95
8.5″ x 11″, 316 pages

Native American Major Leaguers presents biographies of over 40 players who appeared in the major leagues, including both those who are well remembered today for their Native heritage such as Jacoby Ellsbury, Charles Bender, Louis Sockalexis, and Jim Thorpe, and those you might not realize, such as Buck Martinez and Kyle Lohse. Then there are those who deserve to be remembered, like Jim Bluejacket and Ike Kahdot, and even a player from the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, Canadian Yolande Teillet, whose mother was Métis.

The book also includes more than a dozen essays on baseball and Native and Indigenous communities, including historical topics such as the legacy of Indian boarding schools, American Indian barnstorming teams, and the translation of baseball rules into Mi’kmaq, as well as recent issues like the changing of Cleveland’s team name and the controversy over the Atlanta Braves’ “Tomahawk Chop.”

When determining who to include in this volume, we chose players who were enrolled citizens of federally recognized Tribes, as listed by the Office of Federal Acknowledgement in the Bureau of Indian Affairs, part of the US Department of the Interior. The first Native American to play major-league baseball was Louis Sockalexis from the Penobscot Tribe in Maine. He played in 1897 with the Cleveland Spiders. Four others are currently playing in the majors in 2025, all of whom are recognized in this book, as well.

Rob Daugherty, the lead editor, is an Enrolled Citizen of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Rob is a retired educator from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and most recently from the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. A graduate of Haskell Indian Nations University, he has been a lifelong geek fan of baseball, having played and coached collegiately. His passion for Native baseball players has evolved into one of the largest collections of Native American baseball cards focused exclusively on Indigenous players prior to 1947. Through extensive research, he has verified 28 Natives who played from 1897 to 1947.

Wearing the “Vinotinto,” or burgundy red, is a symbol of Venezuelan national pride. Venezuelan teams carry the spirit of a nation where passion for sports runs deep. This book chronicles the journey of nearly 500 Venezuelan baseball players from 1939 through 2024 who have reached Major League Baseball. It explores how baseball became a mirror of Venezuelan society, its triumphs, challenges, and evolving identity, through the words of SABR researchers and respected Venezuelan writers.

In Venezuela, a country defined by rich natural resources, complex social dynamics, and a vibrant cultural identity, baseball has emerged as both a unifying force and a lasting source of pride. Introduced during the early twentieth century through American influence and fueled by the oil boom, the sport quickly captured the hearts of Venezuelans and became a cultural cornerstone.

Passion ignited with legendary figures like Luis Aparicio Ortega, “El Grande de Maracaibo,” and was cemented by Venezuela’s historic win at the 1941 Amateur Baseball World Series in Havana, Cuba.

The journey to Major League Baseball began in 1939 with Alex “Patón” Carrasquel, the first Venezuelan to play in the big leagues. But it was Luis Aparicio Jr., “Little Louie,” who blazed a trail as the first Venezuelan inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, earning his place in 1984 and inspiring generations to dream of the major leagues.

With a foreword by Ozzie Guillén—the first Latino manager to win a World Series—and insights from Juan Vené, “The Dean” of Venezuelan baseball journalism, this volume also features editorial contributions from award-winning journalist and producer Leonte Landino.

Embracing the collaborative efforts of 35 members of the Society for American Baseball Research, this book is more than a chronicle of achievements—it is a tribute to the enduring legacy, global impact, and unmatched resilience of Venezuelan baseball, infused with nostalgia and tradition that reflect a proud and persevering culture.

From Setbacks to Success provides a detailed account of the 1945 Cleveland Buckeyes with biographies of the players and the team officials who led the team to its World Series triumph. Also included is a complete season timeline, articles about some standout games. the story of League Park and Cleveland Stadium (where the Buckeyes played), and an appreciation of the cultural context of the time.

Until the emergence of the Buckeyes in 1942, no Negro League team formed in Cleveland survived more than a year. The high-water mark for the Buckeyes was undoubtedly 1945, when they won the Negro American League title and then, against all odds, defeated the perennial Negro National League champion Homestead Grays four games to none in the Negro League World Series.

This book comprises contributions from 29 members of the Society for American Baseball Research. This history of the 1945 Cleveland Buckeyes is the eighth in a series of SABR books about the great Negro League teams of the first half of the twentieth century.

Stan Musial uncoiled from his famous corkscrew batting stance and hit line drives for 22 big-league seasons. The outfielder-first baseman from Donora, Pennsylvania, spent his entire major league career with the St. Louis Cardinals and remains a beloved figure in his adopted hometown. Musial won seven batting titles and accumulated 3,630 hits. He famously retired with 1,815 hits at home and 1,815 hits on the road, a nod to his amazing consistency. The left-handed batter won three National League MVP awards and earned his spot on 24 All-Star teams, tying him with Willie Mays and Henry Aaron for most in the game’s history.

Fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers gave Musial his memorable nickname. The son of Lukasz and Mary Musial routinely clobbered Brooklyn pitching. “Here comes the man,” the crowd chanted as Musial strode to the plate at Ebbets Field one afternoon in 1946. The episode made it into the newspapers and soon enough all of baseball knew No. 6 for the Cardinals as “Stan the Man.”

This book is a collaborative effort of 34 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and celebrates one of baseball’s greatest players.

Contributors include: Chris Betsch, Ken Carrano, Josh Chetwynd, Alan Cohen, Everett Cope, Richard Cuicchi, Bruce Duncan, Mike Eisenbath, Jeff Findley, Jan Finkel, Jeremy Gibbs, Chip Greene, Vince Guerrieri, Clem Hamilton, Andrew Harner, Tom Hawthorn, Andrew Heckroth, Paul Hofmann, Mike Huber, Russ Lake, Kevin Larkin, Len Levin, Nick Malian, Chad Moody, Bill Nowlin, Bill Pruden, Carl Riechers, C.
“Poets are like baseball pitchers. Both have their moments. The intervals are the tough things.” — Robert Frost

It’s been broadly acknowledged that baseball is the most lyrical of all sports—the one whose natural flow lends itself to poetic rhythm and meter more than any other. Here Comes The Pizzer: The Found Poetry of Baseball Broadcasts recognizes this natural marriage of baseball and rhythm and takes it to the next level. Dozens of poets, researchers, writers, and historians have joined together through the Society for American Baseball Research to create this anthology of the words of the greatest broadcasters in baseball history, fashioned into new and innovative found poems.

Editor Eric Poulin has curated a collection of poems that alternate from wildly humorous to deeply poignant, as the words of legends like Vin Scully, Harry Caray, Red Barber, and Mel Allen sit gracefully alongside those of Dallas Braden, Jerry Remy, and even Snoop Dogg. Collectively, this anthology spans the range of human emotion while being fully grounded in the ebbs and flows of our National Pastime.

Poulin is a Professor of Library and Information Science at Simmons University, and is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research.

Contributors include: Jim Armenti, Gabriel Bogart, Kurt Blumenau, Frank Cressotti, Dan D’Addona, T.S. Flynn, Harrison Golden, Pallas Gutierrez, Joanne Hulbert, Molly McClure, Jordan Nielsen, Ray L. Nielsen, Byron Petraroja, Eric Poulin, Mark Schwaber, Hart Seely, Mark S. 8.5″ x 11″, 326 pages

The 2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox: Grinders and Gamers, published on the twentieth anniversary of the team’s historic World Series victory, celebrates the club that broke “the curse of the Black Sox” to finally bring the White Sox a championship after an 87-year drought. Featuring biographies of every player on the club’s roster in 2005—from the big stars like Paul Konerko and Mark Buehrle to the “cup of coffee” players like Jamie Burke and David Sanders—the book also includes bios of owner Jerry Reinsdorf (who also contributed the Foreword), general manager Kenny Williams, manager Ozzie Guillén and his coaching staff, the team’s television and radio broadcasters, and the club’s home ballpark. More than a dozen articles cover key games, from Buehrle’s Opening Day 1-0 gem (in an hour and 51 minutes) to Game Four of the World Series against the Houston Astros—another 1-0 White Sox victory. Additional essays tell the story of how this club of “grinding and games” fought its way to the title.

The 2005 White Sox won their championship in truly dominating fashion. Only the fifth team in major-league history to win a World Series after leading their division or league every day of the regular season, the White Sox went 11-1 during their postseason run, finishing with a four-game sweep of the Houston Astros. A throwback to teams of the past that relied on durable starting pitchers, the team’s mound staff boasted four starting pitchers who worked 200 or more innings. In the League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Angels, White Sox starters worked all but two-thirds of an inning in the four-games-to-one triumph and finished the series with four straight complete-game wins—a postseason feat last accomplished in 1928. On offense the club was powerful enough to belt 200 home runs—fourth most in the American League—yet it also led the league in sacrifice hits and finished third in stolen bases. The multifaceted tactics known as “Ozzie-ball” resulted in a major-league-high 35 one-run wins—and an unforgettable championship season.

This book is a project of the Chicago chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research, but members of many other local chapters contributed with writing, researching, fact-checking and editing. A total of 57 SABR members worked on the book.

Contributors include: Tom Alesia, Malcolm Allen, Phil Angelo, Doug Barker, John Bauer, Robert Bionaz, Alex Blair, Ben Blotner, Ken Carrano, Alan Cohen, Eric Conrad, Carter Cromwell, Richard Cuicchi, Tim Deale, Alex Edelman, Joey Elledge, J.P.
From Ottawa baseball’s humble beginnings in the nineteenth century to the modern era of professional franchises, From Bytown to the Big Leagues takes you on a thrilling journey through 150 years of America’s pastime in Canada’s capital. Discover the stories of Ottawa’s earliest baseball teams, including two remarkable face-offs against the famed Boston Red Stockings. These early encounters laid the groundwork for the sport’s growth in the region, as amateur teams competed passionately throughout the late nineteenth century, culminating in the city’s first—and short-lived—professional team, the Senators.

Follow the rise and fall of professional franchises like the Ottawa Giants, the Ottawa Lynx, and the current Ottawa Titans. Each team’s journey is marked by significant milestones and challenges, reflecting the ever-changing landscape of baseball in the city. The book delves into the stories of local heroes who have graced the diamond, including Jack Humphries, Frank “Shag” Shaughnessy, Érik Bédard, and Philippe Aumont. These players, among others, have left their mark on Ottawa’s baseball legacy, inspiring generations of fans and aspiring athletes.

This book is the result of collaboration among members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), local researchers, and journalists.

From Bytown to the Big Leagues celebrates the unsung heroes and untold stories that make Ottawa’s baseball history so special. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a newcomer to the sport, this book will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the game’s place in the city’s cultural fabric.

For more than 50 years, SABR and its members have led the way in publishing the best baseball historical and statistical research. Our publications program is shifting to take advantage of new methods of publishing. Not only will we continue to publish new books like Can He Play?
