Correa, Arenado win 2021 Rawlings Platinum Glove Awards, presented by SABR

2021 Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners: Carlos Correa and Nolan ArenadoHouston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa and St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado each won a Rawlings Platinum Glove Award, presented by SABR. The winners were unveiled on Friday, November 12 on MLB Network’s Emmy Award-winning MLB Tonight.

Their respective teams, the Houston Astros and the St. Louis Cardinals, were announced as recipients of the Rawlings Team Defense Award, based on their SABR Defensive Index rankings.

This marks the first Rawlings Platinum Glove Award for Correa and fifth consecutive Rawlings Platinum Glove Award for Arenado.

Save the date: SABR Day is February 5, 2022

SABR Day 2022Please mark your calendars for Saturday, February 5, 2022, when we will hold our annual SABR Day celebration! SABR Day is a way for all baseball fans to come together, regardless of where they live, and talk about the game we all love.

We are planning an exciting 2-hour block of virtual, national SABR programming on Zoom from 8:00-10:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, February 3, so chapters are free to host their own events on February 5. Guest speakers and more details for the national programming on February 3 will be announced soon.

Regional chapters are also encouraged to plan their own SABR Day events (virtually or in person, where it’s safe to do so) throughout the months of January or February to celebrate the start of a new baseball season.

Chapter leaders, please email Jacob Pomrenke as you finalize your SABR Day plans so we can update our comprehensive schedule of events, which will be posted online at SABR.org/sabrday.

Early registration now open for 2022 SABR Virtual Analytics Conference

SABR Virtual Analytics ConferenceEarly registration is now open for the SABR Virtual Analytics Conference, which will be held over three days in online sessions from March 18-20, 2022. We’ll bring together the top minds in the baseball analytics community to discuss, debate, and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball. Register today to join us!

Note: Should future conditions allow for a hybrid event, virtual registrations will be applicable toward in-person registration if desired.

The Virtual Analytics Conference schedule consists of research presentations and guest speakers from throughout the baseball analytics community, career development sessions led by experienced sports professionals, and industry networking opportunities — all available online for any aspiring front office executive or baseball fan to attend from the comfort of home. Students will have opportunities for skill acquisition and development, including sessions on how to work with baseball-related data sets as well as databasing and SQL.

1 week left to submit your presentation abstract for 2022 SABR Virtual Analytics Conference

SABR and Sports Info Solutions are excited to announce the call for presentations for the SABR Virtual Analytics Conference, which will be held online on March 18-20, 2022.

Abstracts of proposed research presentations should be no more than 500 words in length, and must include the abstract’s title, review of previous work on the subject, a summary of the research methodology and anticipated results, and the expected contribution to the field of baseball analytics offered by this work. Please send all abstracts to this e-mail address: analytics@sportsinfosolutions.com. Please clearly indicate whether you are submitting for the general track or for the student track of presentations.

The submission deadline for all 2022 SABR Analytics Conference presentation abstracts is 11:59 p.m. MST, Wednesday, November 24, 2021.

SABR accepting applications for Membership Services Manager position

We’re now seeking applications for a new full-time position based at the SABR office, located in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University in downtown Phoenix.

The Membership Services Manager will lead SABR’s membership service efforts, including new member on-boarding, member communications, and membership transactions. As our Membership Services Manager, you will be responsible for membership retention and helping chapters develop their membership. An integral part of ensuring the success of our baseball community, this position will help drive SABR’s future growth and support the organization’s vision.

Highlights from the SABR Brooklyn 19th Century Baseball Interdisciplinary Symposium

Tom Gilbert's Brooklyn Baseball TourThe virtual SABR Brooklyn 19th Century Baseball Interdisciplinary Symposium was held on November 13-14, 2021. The two-day online symposium, hosted by the SABR Nineteenth Century Committee, was devoted to 19th-century baseball as it was played and evolved in Brooklyn.

Apply now for a SABR Local Grant in 2022

SABR logoWhile we continue to celebrate SABR’s 50th anniversary this year, we are keeping a keen eye on our organization’s future and have so many exciting projects on deck. Today, we would like to share details of one of the most noteworthy programs on the horizon.

In 2022, we will deliver the SABR Local Grants program. This initiative will provide an opportunity for chapters, research committees, and chartered communities to apply for funding for their projects under SABR’s Four Pillars: Research, Scholarship, Preservation, and Future of the Game. In total, $10,000 in SABR Local Grants will be awarded in 2022!

All SABR chapters, chartered communities, and research committees are now eligible to apply, until January 30, 2022. Individual SABR members and non-SABR groups are not eligible, so if you have an individual idea for a program grant, please follow up with your local chapter leadership or appropriate research committee to discuss an application.

SABR Negro Leagues Committee awards scholarships in 2021 essay contest

2022 SABR Jerry Malloy Negro League ConferenceSABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee was pleased to award scholarships to four high school seniors in its 13th annual Thomas R. Garrett Scholarship essay contest in 2021.

  • Doniya Boyd of Chicago, Illinois, was awarded the Rube Foster Scholarship.
  • Ian Rich of Roanoke, Virginia, was awarded the Jimmie Crutchfield Scholarship.
  • Julian Thomas, of Springdale, Maryland, was awarded the Robert Peterson Scholarship.
  • Promise Egbu, of Arlington, Texas, was awarded the Tweed Webb Scholarship.

The contest was open to high school seniors and carrying a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the end of their junior year. Students had to write a 1,200-word essay answering a question related to one of the Negro League figures who are the namesakes of the scholarships. The Foster, Webb, and Peterson scholarships were $1,000, while the Crutchfield scholarship was $500.

SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference is the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination of black baseball history. Learn more at SABR.org/malloy.

Indiana student receives scholarship in 2021 SABR Women in Baseball essay contest

SABR’s Women in Baseball Committee is pleased to award one scholarship to a high school senior in its Women in Baseball Essay Contest in 2021.

Due to the generous donations of committee members, the Women in Baseball Committee has awarded a $500 scholarship to Qamar Saitovski, a graduate of the Indiana Digital School, with an essay on Negro Leagues pioneer Mamie “Peanut” Johnson.

Students were asked to write an essay of 1,500 words or less addressing the following question: “Choose one person or event in women’s baseball history that you believe has made a significant impact on the game and explain the importance.”
