Buck O’Neil/North Florida Chapter meeting recap – 3/4/2020

MINUTES OF THE SOCIAL GATHERING OF THE BUCK O’NEIL CHAPTER OF SABR, MARCH 4, 2020

Buck O’Neil/North Florida Chapter members gathered at Island Wing Company in Tallahassee, Florida, at 6 PM on March 4, 2020. In attendance were:

  • Matt Keelean, Chapter President
  • Jeff English
  • Jim Wolf
  • Rick Swaine
  • Kent Putnam
  • Chuck Rosciam
  • Roger Raepple
  • Brent Kallestad
  • Ben Gaddis
  • Fred Dunphy
  • Glenn Robertson
  • Joe Midgett

The first order of business was selecting a new location for the monthly meetings of the Chapter. It was agreed that Island Wing Company would be eliminated from consideration because of excessive noise. It was further agreed that other venues would be explored by Chapter members.

President Keelean pointed out that Do It for Chappie: The Ray Chapman Tragedy, a historical novel written by Chapter member Rick Swaine, appears on SABR’s Bookshelf listings for Winter 2020.

Our attention was brought to an upcoming screening of a film and presentation relating thereto on March 15 at Pebble Hill Plantation in South Georgia. The film is thought to be the oldest of its kind (competition between two African American teams) in Georgia.

Members were reminded to submit their predictions for the 2020 season before the first pitch on March 26.

The Chapter plans to attend an FSU baseball game as a group this season and selected May 5 as the date.

Some Chapter members expressed interest in attending meetings of another group, MLB Tallahassee, which meets on the second Saturday of each month.

A Facebook group called the Can of Corn Club, focused on baseball in and around the Tallahassee area, was recommended.

Several Chapter members plan to attend SABR 50 in Baltimore in July; discussion was had regarding the convention and travel to and from the Baltimore area.

Finally, Glenn Robertson shared his copy of The Perfect Yankee (a book about Don Larsen and his perfect WS game), a baseball signed by the recently-deceased Larsen, and a baseball signed by several notable Yankee players, announcers, and front office personnel.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8 PM.

— Kent Putnam
Chapter Secretary
