Joe Jachym

Joe Jachym

In 1939, Joe Jachym joined the Tigers as a batting-practice pitcher, succeeding Charley Eckert, who had been promoted to manage in the minor leagues. Eckert was never listed on the roster. How did it happen that Jachym was issued a uniform number—16, the number Hal Newhouser would later wear? Because it fit. George Gill, who wore 16 immediately before Jachym, was Jachym’s height and almost his same weight. (COURTESY OF HERM KRABBENHOFT)
