2010 The Sporting News-SABR Award Winners Announced

The Sporting News-SABR Baseball Research Award, which recognizes outstanding baseball research in areas other than history and biography, has been awarded for the following books:

  • Satch, Dizzy, and Rapid Robert: The Wild Saga of Interracial Baseball Before Jackie Robinson, written by Timothy M. Gay and published by Simon & Schuster

  • Evaluating Baseball’s Managers: A History and Analysis of Performance in the Major Leagues, 1876–2008, written by Chris Jaffe and published by McFarland

  • New Mexico Baseball: Miners, Outlaws, Indians and Isotopes, 1880 to the Present, written by L.M. Sutter and published by McFarland

The authors will receive their awards at the SABR 41 national convention, July 6-10 at the Long Beach Hilton in Southern California. The Sporting News sponsors the $200 cash awards that accompany the honor.

Gay is the author of Tris Speaker: The Rough-and-Tumble Life of a Baseball Legend (University of Nebraska Press, 2006). His essays and articles have appeared in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, USA Today, and many other publications. Tim is a graduate of Georgetown University and lives in northern Virginia with his wife and three children.

Jaffe is an instructor of history and a columnist for the The Hardball Times. He lives in Schaumburg, Illinois.

Sutter also won The Sporting News-SABR Baseball Research Award last year, for her book Ball, Bat and Bitumen: A History of Coalfield Baseball in the Appalachian South (McFarland). She is an artist, writer and baseball fan. A member of SABR, she lives in southwest Virginia.

The Sporting News-SABR Baseball Research Award is designed to honor projects that do not fit the criteria for The Seymour Medal or the McFarland-SABR Baseball Research Award.

The selection committee consists of: Steve Gietschier (non-voting chair), Monte Cely, Andrew Goldblatt and Monica Nucciarone.

To submit a nomination for the 2011 awards, which will be presented at the SABR 42 national convention in 2012, please send the work's title, author and publisher information to Steve Gietschier.
