Creating the Pete Hill baseball card set
From Allison Brophy Champion at the Culpeper Star Exponent on December 23, 2011, on SABR members Gary Cieradkowski and Gary Ashwill:
The image of National Baseball Hall of Fame power hitter and Culpeper native John “Preston” Pete Hill (1882-1951) just got very collectible.
California artist Gary Cieradkowski has teamed with Hill’s great-nephew, Major Ron Hill of Pittsburgh, and baseball researcher Gary Aswhill to create 15 original baseball cards detailing the Negro League standout’s long and varied career spanning the first quarter of the 20th century.
Cieradkowski considers Pete Hill one of the greatest black ballplayers of all time so when his descendant Ron Hill contacted him about doing the set he agreed whole-heartedly.
“As for the artwork, they are all original, never-before-seen pieces I executed specifically for the set,” said Cieradkowski. “Pete played on so many teams it was an interesting job to illustrate him as he aged through the years and picture him in all the various colorful uniforms he wore at the time.”
