SABR partners with MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference for 2014 baseball analytics panel

The Next Frontier of Baseball Analytics, presented by SABR, will be the 2014 baseball analytics panel at the eighth annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.

The panel will take place at 9 a.m. EST on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts. For more information, visit sloansportsconference.com.

Here are the scheduled speakers for The Next Frontier of Baseball Analytics, presented by SABR on Saturday, March 1: 

  • Vince GennaroVince GennaroVince Gennaro, President, SABR: Vince is the President of SABR and author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball. He is a consultant to MLB teams, appears regularly on MLB Network, and he teaches in the graduate programs at Columbia University and Manhattanville College. He is also the architect of the Diamond Dollars Case Competition series, which brings together students and MLB team and league executives and serves as unique learning experience, as well as a networking opportunity for aspiring sports executives.
  • Brian Kenny, Host, MLB Network: Brian is the host of MLB Network's critically acclaimed “Clubhouse Confidential,” where he incorporates sabermetrics into the day's baseball news. Brian KennyBrian KennyA 25-year national TV and radio veteran, Brian joined MLB Network from ESPN, where he was a “SportsCenter” anchor, host of the Brian Kenny Show on ESPN Radio and an Emmy Award-winning anchor for “Baseball Tonight.”
  • Jeff Luhnow, General Manager, Houston Astros: Jeff was named the 12th General Manager in Astros franchise history in December 2011. In his first two seasons, the Astros' minor league system experienced a dramatic turnaround and is currently considered to be among the best in the industry. In 2013, the top six affiliates all made the postseason (a feat no other organization had accomplished since 2003), with three teams reaching the finals and two winning championships. Prior to joining the Astros, Jeff spent eight years with the St. Louis Cardinals as Jeff LuhnowJeff LuhnowVice President of Baseball Development (2003-05), Vice President of Player Procurement (2005), and Vice President of Scouting and Player Development (2006-11.) He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in economics and engineering. He also earned his MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
  • Rob Neyer, Senior Baseball Editor, FoxSports.com: Rob joined FoxSports.com in 2014 as its Senior Baseball Editor after serving as National Baseball Editor at SB Nation for the past three years. Prior to that, he spent 15 years covering Major League Baseball as a columnist at ESPN.com. Rob began his career as a research assistant for groundbreaking baseball author Bill James, Rob NeyerRob Neyerand later worked for STATS, Inc. He has also written or co-written six baseball books, including The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers (with Bill James), winner of the Sporting News/SABR Baseball Research Award.
  • Nate Silver, Founder, FiveThirtyEight: Nate is a leading statistician and best-selling author known for his unique brand of creativity, journalism and statistical analysis. He is the founder of the award-winning website FiveThirtyEight.com, which was recently acquired by ESPN and will be expanding its coverage to include topics such as sports, economics, culture, science and technology, among others. He has established himself as today’s leading statistician through his innovative analyses of political polling. Nate SilverNate SilverHe is also the author of the New York Times-bestselling book The Signal and The Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail – But Some Don’t, and the co-author of a series of books on baseball statistics, which include Mind Game, Baseball Between the Numbers, and It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over. Nate established his credentials as an analyst of baseball statistics, developing a widely acclaimed player projection system called PECOTA (Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm.) He has written for ESPN.com, Sports Illustrated, Slate, Baseball Prospectus, Newsweek, the New York Post, and the Los Angeles Times.
  • Bill Squadron, Head of Bloomberg Sports: Bill has been an executive, government official and attorney in the telecommunications, sports and media fields for more than 25 years. Bill SquadronBill SquadronHe currently heads Bloomberg Sports, the division of Bloomberg LP that provides data, statistical analysis, and visualizations for sports professionals and fans. Before joining Bloomberg, Mr. Squadron was President of the IP PRIME division of SES Americom, and a member of SES Americom’s Management Committee. Previously, Mr. Squadron headed advanced media and technology in North America for IMG, where his team produced a variety of Web and wireless products and services in sports and fashion for Tiger Woods, Maria Sharapova, Jeff Gordon, Fashion Week at Bryant Park, CBSSportsline.com, Sprint, the Staples Center, the USTA and many others. From 1997 to 2003, he was co-founder, Chairman and CEO of SportVision, pushing for television innovations such as the yellow first down marker in football, NASCAR Race f/x and the “K Zone” baseball tracking system.

The Sloan Conference, co-founded in 2006 by Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey and Kraft Sports Group Vice President of Customer Marketing & Strategy Jessica Gelman, provides a forum for professionals, executives, leading researchers, students, and fans to discuss the increasing role of analytics in the global sports industry.
