Zimmer: An appreciation of Fred Schuld
From SABR member Robert Zimmer at the Baseball Heritage Museum on December 16, 2013:
I was fortunate to get to know Fred Schuld over the past 16 years through the Baseball Heritage Museum. Fred was always willing to share his knowledge with anyone interested in baseball, he enriched the experience at the museum through his talks and donations. He was an educator, friend and role model and each person he met was touched by his kindness and gentle manner. The Baseball Heritage Museum will continue to tell the stories, share the history and heritage of baseball as Fred did, with a passion for the game and those that played it.
Fred was one of the founders of the Jack Graney Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research in the late 1980s. He gave wonderful, quirky, presentations at the chapter meetings and brought that same spirit to “Fridays with Fred at the Baseball Heritage Museum”.
When the SABR office moved to Cleveland in 1990, Fred came in once a week to volunteer and help with mailings. He spent lots of time in the microform room at Cleveland Public Library digging up information for his presentations and helping numerous other researchers with their projects.
