Baseball Index Project Committee

By SABR

Welcome to the Baseball Index Project!

Formerly known as the Bibliography Committee, the Baseball Index Project committee was formed to locate, identify, evaluate, classify and describe the literature of the national pastime. Frank Phelps was the founding chairperson.

The committee's largest project is The Baseball Index project, an ongoing effort to catalog all baseball literature. The Baseball Index is a database for finding out what has been written on any baseball subject, from the earliest days of baseball to the present. The database currently contains more than 240,000 records of books, articles, book sections, and other materials.

The committee also prepares bibliographies on baseball topics, indexes to baseball books, conducts research into baseball literature, and writes reviews of past and current baseball books. The committee publishes SABR Research Guides on a variety of baseball topics, a quarterly listing of new baseball publications with archives available on this site from 1995 and a quarterly committee newsletter.

Through 2006, the late Joe Murphy annually compiled an Index to SABR Publications. If you are interested in updating this index, please get in touch with SABR Baseball Index Project chair Andy McCue at agmccue44@earthlink.net. To view the Index to SABR Publications, click here.

All SABR articles from 2011 and earlier are also included at www.baseballindex.org; you can search that database by author, by persons named or by several thousand topics.

From 1985-1991, a series of 15 Research Guides was published by SABR's Bibliography Committee. These guides were intended to help researchers more easily find specific articles and subjects in various publications such as Sporting Life, The Sporting News, Current Biography, Dictionary of American Biography, Who's Who in Baseball, Baseball Stars, Guide to Baseball Literature and various history journals.
