Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx Opening Day at Yankee Stadium 1936

Description

A slide of a black-and-white photograph of Lou Gehrig (right) and Jimmie Foxx (left) posing together on April 17, 1936. Both Gehrig and Foxx are shown crouching side by side in full uniform. They are posed directly toward the camera but are looking at each other. Foxx is wearing the Boston Red Sox road uniform with "Boston" across his jersey top. He is crouched on his toes and with the knob end of a baseball bat resting on his right thigh. The bat's head is resting on the ground. Gehrig is wearing the home uniform of the New York Yankees with the "NY" logo on the left side of his jersey. He is looking at Foxx and smiling. He is also crouching on his toes, and his hands are clasped together in front of him. Both players are leaning toward each other so that they are touching at the upper arms. In the background are stands with people sitting and some bunting draped over the lower-level fencing. The original caption found outside of the collection reads, "Two of the American League's home run hitters, Jimmy Foxx, left, of the Boston Red Sox, and Lou Gehrig, of the New York Yankees, met for the first time this season when the Yankees opened the season in the Yankee Stadium, April 17th. The Sox proved the better team that day by defeating the Yankees, 8-0." See gehrilo01_04.
