A slide of a black-and-white photograph of Lou Gehrig sitting on the dugout steps on May 2, 1939, days after he stopped playing. Gehrig is shown from the ankles up in the center of the image. He is wearing the road uniform of the New York Yankees. He is facing away from the camera toward the field. His face is in profile, with his left side visible. He is sitting on the 2nd step from the top of the dugout with his knees folded back and leaning on the top step with his right elbow. His arms are folded across his midsection. There is a blurred image of two players in the distance who can not be identified. A photograph caption found outside of the collection reads, "Lou Gehrig Sitting on Dugout Step" The original caption reads: "Benched at his own request, after running up a record string of 2,130 consecutive games, "Iron Man" Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees, is shown watching his teammates carry on against Detroit. Later, it was found that Gehrig was suffering from a form of infantile paralysis. This photo won Third Prize in the Hearst Annual Photographic Competition."
