Harmon Killebrew May 1962 Sport Magazine Photograph

Description

A color slide of a photograph of page 64 in the May 1962 issue of Sport magazine of Harmon Killebrew being congratulated by teammates as he crosses home plate. The page accompanied a feature entitled “Harmon Killebrew: Pressures on a Home-Run Hero.” The players are in Washington Senators road uniforms (before the Senators’ move to Minnesota), and Killebrew is wearing a Senators batting helmet. Killebrew’s full body is visible as he steps on the plate with his left foot, with his right leg trailing behind. His body is turned slightly to the right. Two unidentified Senators teammates have their hands extended to congratulate him. They face Killebrew, and only the right sides of their bodies are visible to the camera. A third Senators player is mostly obscured behind Killebrew, but he is holding a bat at the barrel end, and the rest of the bat extends at an angle about a foot off the ground. The third-base dugout is visible in the background, including three Senators players or coaches standing. The lower level of the stands is visible above the dugout, with a significant crowd in attendance. On the facing page of the magazine is a smaller black-and-white photo of Killebrew in a Minnesota Twins cap and uniform. The facing page also shows a portion of the accompanying article, written by Emmett Watson, with a photo credit: “Color by Marvin Newman.”
