Negro Leagues Committee Announces Scholarship Essay Contest
Submit your essay to win a $2,500 scholarship from SABR’s negro Leagues Committee. Topics include the influence of Rube Foster or the legacy of Jackie Robinson.
The Negro Leagues Committee (NLC) of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is sponsoring its second essay scholarship contest. Below are instructions for the 2010 – 2011 essay-writing contest. There will be two $2,500 scholarships awarded from SABR. Download the application (as a PDF) here.
Each year the NLC hosts the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference. Some initiatives of the conference include donations of books to local schools and/or libraries, raising funds for headstones of unmarked graves of former Negro League players, and the awarding of scholarships.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
1. Current high school senior.
2. Anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application.
3. Planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution.
4. Carrying a minimum 2.5 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.
SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Application must be completed in full. (downloads as a PDF)
2. The essay must be attached to the application.
3. The submission must include a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, guidance counselor or a school administrator, confirming graduation and GPA.
Students must write an essay of 1,000 words or less on one of the following questions:
“What influence or impact did Rube Foster have on the African American community by creating the Negro Leagues?
“What is the legacy of Jackie Robinson?”
The Planning Committee of the Jerry Malloy Negro League Committee will review all the applications and make two selections. Note, only one essay will be accepted per applicant. The scholarship winners will be notified by April 15, 2011. Complete rules and application available here.
