McCaffrey: Chaim Bloom got an unconventional start to his career: as Baseball Prospectus’ first intern

As a sophomore at Yale University in 2002, Chaim Bloom was reading Baseball Prospectus, as usual, when something caught his eye.
It was a posting for an internship.
The classics (Latin) major was an avid baseball fan and devoured the analytically progressive website. He also suspected a career in baseball might be a path he wanted to pursue.
So Bloom — who in October was hired as the Red Sox chief baseball officer — became one of hundreds who applied. He was the only one who got the job, however, meaning he made his initial foray into professional baseball via the world of journalism.
“(Bloom’s) resume basically floated out and said, ‘Yeah, find something wrong with me,’” said Will Carroll, then a writer/editor at Baseball Prospectus.
