SABR Day

Save the date! SABR Day is on Saturday, January 31, 2026

Save the date! Saturday, January 31, 2026 is our annual SABR Day celebration! SABR Day is a way for all baseball fans to come together, regardless of where they live, and talk about the game we all love.

Regional chapters are also encouraged to plan their own SABR Day events (virtually or in person) throughout the months of January or February to celebrate the start of a new baseball season.

  • Chapter leaders, please email Jacob Pomrenke as you finalize your SABR Day plans so we can update our comprehensive schedule of events.

We’ll celebrate SABR Day 2026 for the Magnolia Chapter in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1:00-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 17 at the Dunwoody Public Library, 5339 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30338. All baseball fans are welcome to attend.

Program details to be announced soon.

If you are interested in presenting on any aspect of baseball, please contact Craig Brown.

The holidays will soon be behind us and, although never far from our minds, the National Pastime will soon again be front and center. It all starts with the 20th Annual Bill Gilbert Winter Meeting, sponsored by the Rogers Hornsby (Central Texas) Chapter of SABR.

This year’s meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Texas State University in San Marcos, 250 Old Main Drive in San Marcos, Texas. (See directions below).

Named after our late chapter founder and president, the meeting will include our traditional chapter activities, as well as a series of presentations from both chapter members and outside speakers, with some new surprises. Through the efforts of chapter member and friend Mike Capps, we are honored to welcome University of Texas legend and 12-year major leaguer Keith Moreland, who will discuss the Longhorns’ 1975 national championship, as well as his long association with the Chicago Cubs, including as a member of the 1984 NL East champions and a team broadcaster.

Through the efforts of chapter member and Maryland native Ryan Pollack, we are also pleased to welcome, via Zoom, Michael Gibbons, director emeritus of the Babe Ruth Birthplace & Museum in Baltimore, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary as the repository of all things Bambino.

The meeting will also feature:

  • A Zoom presentation by Rob Sheinkopf, author of the recently published “Baseball Impostors: The Dark Side of Fandom,” and “Hey Mom, Wanna Have a Catch?: A Collection of Baseball Stories…Honoring Moms and Dads Who Taught Us to Love America’s National Pastime” (featuring a chapter by our own Monte Cely);
  • A Zoom presentation by Douglas Kurkul, a former chapter member and author of “It’s a Beautiful Day for Baseball: The National Pastime in the 1960s”;
  • Reports from representatives of our local minor league teams, the San Antonio Missions and Round Rock Express, as well as a presentation by Texas State master’s graduate and former Sugar Land Space Cowboys creative marketing associate Carly Earnest on their season;
  • Presentations from chapter members Dick Butler (“Town Ball: Depression-era Baseball in the Texas Hill Country”) and Frank Rechtorovic (“The Emerald City”);
  • A new feature, i.e. a series of mini-workshops on different topics, including various baseball statistics and Strat-O-Matic and other baseball simulation games, presented in a “speed dating” format allowing participants to jump from one small group to another;
  • Our traditional features, including our mock Hall of Fame voting, the presentation of awards to the winners of our Predictatron, Awardatron, and Contractatron contests, and presentations by chapter members regarding their 2025 baseball experiences; and
  • Best of all, the opportunity to meet and interact with friends and colleagues from the local baseball community.

Please note that we will have an onsite pizza lunch available for pre-order. We will also be soliciting donations of old baseballs, gloves, bats and other gear for use in our “Baseball Memories” program, which supports baseball reminiscence activities as a means of improving the lives of persons dealing with dementia, chronic health problems, isolation, or loneliness.

We hope that you will be able to join us for our biggest and hopefully best event of the year, as we reflect upon the season past and whet our collective appetites for the season ahead.

Watch for a winter meeting reminder and meeting schedule in early January on our email list and on this chapter website.

  2. Travel west on Aquarena Springs Drive, which turns into University Drive.
  3. After crossing the San Marcos River, you will come to a traffic light. Turn right onto Sessom Drive. At the first light, turn left on State Street and go up a steep road toward Old Main (pictured above). Go through a gate (the gate should be up) and continue up the hill.

All baseball fans are invited to attend the Baltimore Babe Ruth Chapter’s annual SABR Day celebration!

MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 2026 – MLK DAY
9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Peabody Heights Brewery
401 East 30th Street
Baltimore, MD, 21218

Peabody Heights is located on the former site of Terrapin Park, home of the Federal League Baltimore Terrapins, and Oriole Park V, home of the International League Orioles.

PRESENTERS

Tyrone Brooks – SABR Member and Senior Director of Major League Baseball’s Front Office & Field Staff Diversity Pipeline Program.  Tyrone will start us off with a presentation recognizing Martin Luther King, Jr., his friendship with Jackie Robinson and his work with MLB’s Pipeline Program designed to increase the pool of minority and female candidates for on-field and baseball operations positions.  Tyrone previously worked for the Pirates, Braves, and Guardians.

Rich Dubroff – SABR Member and Lead Orioles Writer at BaltimoreBaseball.com.  Rich will discuss the Orioles off-season moves with predictions for the coming year.  BaltimoreBaseball.com was founded in early 2016 to provide insight and analysis on the Orioles, their minor league affiliates, and the Baltimore-area high school and college baseball scene.

Benjamin Weingarten – Canopy Team Project Manager will discuss “The Design of the American Ballpark:  A study on the evolution of ballpark design and architectural trends through baseball history.  To explore the relationships between a city and venue and impact of design on fan behavior and revenue opportunities.” At Canopy, Ben manages the design and implementation of projects at sports venues   He has worked for 3 years with the Pirates on enhancements at PNC Park, the National Baseball Hall of Fame on a new retail store, the creation of Polar Park in Worcester and improvements at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea FC’s home in London.

Jane Leavy – Award-winning former sportswriter and feature writer for The Washington Post, known for diving into a subject and emerging with work that is both meticulously researched and narratively rich. Jane is the author of the national bestsellers The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created, The Last Boy Book: Mickey Mantle and the End of America’s Childhood, Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy, and the comic novel, Squeeze Play, called “the best novel ever written about baseball” by Entertainment Weekly. She lives in Washington, D.C. and Truro, Massachusetts.  Jane will discuss her newest bestselling book Make Me Commissioner: I Know What’s Wrong with Baseball and How to Fix It.

Don Rovak – Baltimore Orioles Chief Revenue Officer – Dan focuses on revenue generation through ticket and corporate sales in both Baltimore and Sarasota, Fla., and creating local economic impact for the city, state, and surrounding area. Don will discuss ongoing construction and upgrades coming to Camden Yards.

Former Oriole – TBD.

Tom Hanrahan – SABR Member – Tom will discuss this year’s World Series and how it ended on a very rare play: Alejandro Kirk grounding into a double play to give the Dodgers the trophy.  But had Kirk successfully connected with a hit – thereby scoring two to three runs, Kirk would have given the Blue Jays the trophy. And so, therein was the chance that the championship could have been won or lost based on that one plate appearance.  Tom will discuss the other (few) times where this occurred in a World Series – Game 7, home team up in the 9th or later, losing but with the potential winning run already on base, yet never scoring.

COST – $49 – includes a hot lunch from Hampden’s Blue Pit BBQ and drinks (Peabody Heights Beer including Old Oriole Park Bohemian will be on tap for purchase).

TO REGISTER – CONTACT BBRC Treasurer Bob Brown via email at bacbrown@gmail.com – make checks payable to “BBRC of SABR” or pay via Venmo at @sabrbaberuth.

SWAP MEET – On hand will be lots of donated baseball books, memorabilia, souvenirs, apparel etc., available thru the BBRC swap meet (cash donations also welcome).
