Auker-Seminick Chapter meeting recap – 12/7/2013

Central Florida’s Auker-Seminick Chapter met in St. Cloud, Florida, on Saturday, December 7, with a program highlighted by a preview of author Peter Golenbock’s new book They Call Me God, published by Simon and Schuster, due out in mid-March 2014. It documents the career of Hall of Fame umpire Doug Harvey. Golenbock provided attendees with background about Harvey’s temptuous relationship with umpire Al Barlick, an interaction that helped forge Harvey into an outstanding umpire.

Attendees also were introduced to new baseball terminology by Dave Larson, chapter co-chair, and received fascinating insights into on-the-field requirements by umpires by SABR member Jim Bard of Daytona Beach, who has umpired high school baseball for over 40 years.

Peter Gordon of Orlando also talked about how he got involved with writing for the blog, “Rays Colored Glasses.” Jim Satterly of DeLand also led a lively discussion on rules changes that baseball should make.

The Auker-Seminick chapter is planning their next meeting during the afternoon of Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Tampa Bay Rays’ Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, capped by the Cleveland Indians at Tampa Bay the same evening.
