The Auker-Seminick SABR chapter in Central Florida had an information-packed meeting Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Jackson Branch Library in Lakeland, Florida.
Retired sportswriter and columnist Russ Schneider talked about his latest book,The Legends of the Tribe, about the greats of the Cleveland Indians and recounted his experience while covering the Indians for nearly three decades, starting in 1964.
Sam Zygner talked about the 1956 International League Miami Marlins game in the Orange Bowl that attracted over 51,000 aned featured Satchel Paige, who pitched into the eighth inning and drove in three runs with a double to lead the Marlins to a 6-2 win over the Columbus Jets.
Roy Kerr provided insights on baseball in 19th century, including profiles of early baseball greats Buck Ewing, Roger Conners, and Big Dan Brouthers.
Author Carol McKechnie Montgomery (The Deacon’s Daughter), daughter of Hall of Fame manager Bill McKechnie, recounted her recollection the baseball players her father managed and coached from the 1930s and 1950s.
