Bob Broeg St. Louis Chapter meeting recap – 2/20/2012

Seventeen people attended the regular monthly roundtable of the Bob Broeg SABR Chapter Monday, February 20, 2012, at its usual location, the Original Crusoe’s Restaurant in South St. Louis.

John Schoon recalled watching Bud Byerly pitch in a 1940s game at Sportsman’s Park.

Member Kris Lokemoen gave a report on Pat Jordan’s now-classic baseball memoir, “A False Spring.”

Vice president Brain Flaspohler introduced the idea of having more research projects to be done by the chapter, like its recent project to put historical markers on the sites of former major league ballparks in St. Louis. There also was discussion of having a chapter pamphlet and website.

Noting that a second wild card may be used in MLB starting this season, Jim Rygelski gave a presentation on who the second wild card teams might have been if baseball had used a second wild card since 1995. (Read the text of his presentation here.)

Bob Tiemann gave a presenation on how Cardinals and Cubs managers since 1892 had done in games against the other.

Membership discussed the upcoming Cardinals’ season, noting the changes in manager, pitching coach, some position players.
