Bud Metheny/Virginia Eastern Shore Chapter meeting recap – 9/15/2019
SABR’s Bud Metheny/Virginia Eastern Shore Chapter met on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at the Williamsburg Library. Thanks to Paul Boren and Alexis Collins for their great presentations yesterday.
 1) Scouting the Mind – Alexis Collins
With the rise of analytics and video in the scouting of players, is it possible to develop a quantifiable method to evaluate the tenacity and mental make-up of an individual?  Alexis led us through a discussion on the current debate in the scouting industry.
If you are interested in this topics here are some books to further your understanding:
 1) GRIT by Angela Duckworth
 2) 90% Mental by Bob Tewksbury
 3) The MVP Machine by Ben Lindbergh and Travis Sawchik
 2) Red Barber – Paul Boren
We listened to a few minutes of Red Barber’s announcing skills and then Paul walked us through the highlights of Red’s life and career. Paul will be leading a discussion on baseball announcers at William and Mary’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on October 17th at 2PM. See page 30 in the course catalog if you are interested.
Our next meeting will be our first Book Club. I will be sending out a survey to select the book:
