Quebec Chapter meeting recap – 8/18/2024
The SABR-Québec Chapter organized its annual outing to a ball game on August 18, 2024 at Stade Quillorama, a historic jewel in Trois-Rivières. The occasion was a Frontier League contest between the Trois-Rivières Aigles and the New Jersey Jackals.
The few hardened fans who made the trip to see the game in spite of the threat of inclement weather – in the end, the afternoon unfolded without a drop of rain – were treated to a barnburner of a game that ended in the bottom of the 9th on a play that would have made the great Homer Simpson proud: a walk-off hit-by-pitch. By letting a pitch by Dazon Cole graze his uniform, James Smibert capped off a 4-for-4 day by pushing across the winning run in a 7-6 win by the home team.
Before this somewhat anticlimactic ending, we enjoyed a real slugfest that featured no less than six home runs, including three by Clayton Mehlbauer of the Jackals and one by Smibert, in addition to five doubles and a triple. Also, on two separate occasions, New Jersey’s pitcher fielded a bunt only to throw the ball away in the distance, a towering pop fly landed ten feet in front of home plate between a trio of players for a single, which was followed by the next batter hitting another pop fly, this one caught by the Aigles’ catcher while crashing full speed into the fence protecting his team’s dugout, right in front of our seats. In other words, there was plenty of action and the game was highly entertaining.
Members present were informed of the ambitious SABR-Quebec program for the next two years. The chapter will be back to hosting four meetings per year.

Le chapitre SABR-Québec a tenu sa sortie annuelle à un match de baseball le 18 août 2024 au Stade Quillorama de Trois-Rivières, un joyau historique, à l’occasion d’un affrontement de la ligue Frontier entre les Aigles de Trois-Rivières et les Jackals du New Jersey.
Les quelques partisans endurcis qui ont effectué le déplacement afin d’assister au match malgré les menaces de pluie – il n’est finalement pas tombé une goutte de tout l’après-midi – ont eu droit à un match enlevant qui s’est terminé en fin de 9e manche sur un jeu digne du grand Homer Simpson : un frappeur atteint pour mettre fin à la partie. En se laissant effleurer par le lancer de Dazon Cole, James Smibert a couronné une journée de 4 en 4 en poussant le point victorieux au marbre dans une victoire de 7 à 6 de l’équipe locale.
Avant cette fin de match un peu décevante, nous avons eu droit à un festival offensif, avec pas moins de six coups de circuit, dont trois par Clayton Mehlbauer des Jackals et un par Smibert, en plus de cinq doubles et d’un triple. Il y a également eu deux occasions où le lanceur du New Jersey a capté un amorti pour ensuite lancer la balle un peu n’importe où, un ballon frappé à dix pieds devant le marbre mais tombant entre un trio de joueurs pour un coup sûr, suivi un frappeur plus tard par un autre ballon, capté cette fois par le receveur des Aigles alors qu’il est entré à pleine vitesse dans la clôture protégeant l’abri des joueurs de son équipe, et ce tout juste en face de nos sièges. Bref, l’action n’a pas manqué et la partie fut des plus intéressantes.
Les membres présents ont été informés de l’ambitieux programme de SABR-Québec pour les deux prochaines années. Le chapitre sera de nouveau en mesure d’organiser quatre réunions par année.
