Adler: Yankees exec Jean Afterman wants to see an MLB team hire a female GM, just not her

As​ a child, Jean​ Afterman was fascinated by Queen Elizabeth​ I.​ Her mother, Marjorie,​ pointed her​ towards the Tudor​ monarch​ and​​ instilled in her an appreciation of British history that to this day has persisted.

“She was a woman in a man’s world,” Afterman says of Elizabeth I, who was initially denied a place as the rightful heir to her father’s throne on the basis of her gender. “She succeeded in a man’s world, and I think that’s how I saw myself — that I was a woman in a man’s world.”

Afterman has fulfilled that destiny, becoming the highest-ranked woman in a major-league baseball operations department.

She is a Yankees assistant general manager and senior vice president, focusing on player contracts, rule compliance and the club’s business in Asia. She is now the Yankees’ fourth-most senior executive.
