Bain: Ball-strike outcomes: gaining the upper hand

How do ballplayers fare in different ball-strike counts? Is there a substantial variation in batting and slugging percentages as one goes deeper in the count? In which counts does the batter or pitcher gain a significant advantage?

Revisiting the Retrosheet Event Files after extensively utilizing them throughout the “Taking the Extra Base” and “BABIP by Location” chapters in “Hardball Retroactive“, I scrutinized the logs for stimulating statistics. Realizing the data set contained comprehensive ball-strike information for the past three decades (1988-2017), I commenced the crunching of numbers to reveal single-season and career-bests by batters and pitchers in the various counts (with the caveat of small sample sizes) while assessing trends over a 30-year timeframe.
