Ben Reiter: 'Astroball' book signing (Washington, DC)

On Saturday, September 29, 2018, the penultimate day of the regular season, Sports Illustrated senior writer Ben Reiter will talk about his new book Astroball: The New Way to Win It All at Politics and Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave. NW (just south of Nebraska) in Washington, DC.

Reiter's talk begins at 6 p.m. He will be "in conversation" with David Epstein, author of "The Sports Gene" and formerly an investigative reporter for ProPublica.

Reiter had famously predicted in a 2014 SI cover story the Astros would win the 2017 World Series -- which they did. As Politics and Prose puts it, "Critics scoffed -- but Reiter was vindicated by events. What lay behind both his foresight and the Astros'  astonishing turnaround is the riveting story of a revolutionary analytics system that blends human expertise with hard numbers, getting the best out of both statistical models and old-fashioned gut instincts. Drawing on long-term access to Astros players and executives, Reiter gives a play-by-play account of how the club made key draft decisions, developed younger players and fielded essential veterans, and remade itself in a remarkably short time."

The program is free, and there will be plenty of copies of "Astroball" at $27 (plus tax) each for buying and autographing.
