On Thursday, Betsy “Sockum” Jochum will be inducted into the South Bend Community Hall of Fame. Betsy was a pitcher for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL).

She was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Frank and Katherine Jochum, who immigrated to the U.S. from Hungary shortly before the beginning of World War I.

Betsy got the itch for baseball at a young age playing sandlot ball. She continued her love of sports in high school by participating in track and field, basketball, volleyball and softball. After high school, Betsy worked a number jobs to support herself while playing semi-professional softball in the Cincinnati League.
