Brown: SABR Springfield chapter is making a comeback

From SABR member Garry Brown at the Springfield Republican on April 26, 2019:

Springfield’s chapter of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research) has made a comeback, thanks to good promotional work by its president, James Winston.

He and his vice-president, Steve Manioudakis, succeeded in landing former Boston Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette as main speaker for the chapter’s spring meeting Monday night. They also had Gordon Edes, a former baseball writer for the Boston Globe who now works for the Red Sox as their archivist and good-will ambassador.

“Attendance had been dwindling at our meetings. We needed to spark renewed interest in our chapter, and we figured that having big names associated with Red Sox history would be a good start,” Winston said.

He was right. On a rainswept night, Monday’s meeting drew 72 baseball fans, which is a nice turnout compared to the 15-20 that had attended the chapter’s fall meeting last September.

“The presentation worked well as Edes asked questions of Duquette regarding his time with the Red Sox (1994-2001) and his years as GM with the Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles. Later on, they took questions from the audience,” Winston said.
