Brown: Statheads, researchers mourn as MLB’s Red and Green Books are discontinued

Not all will sigh at this news. In fact, the average baseball fan may not have ever heard of them. But for those in the baseball research community, or those that have covered it in the media, today is the end of an era.

Major League Baseball has discontinued publishing the Green and Red Books, two media guides that provided scores of data on teams for a given season, plus historical information. They were discontinued in print form a few years back, and now PDF versions are going the way of the dodo. As more information has become available via the internet through indispensable baseball research sites such as Baseball-Reference, the league polled a number of members of the press and clubs and determined that they had outlived their usefulness. Media members will simply put in requests to gain information, but there’s little doubting that members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), and others will no longer be able to find this data the further time moves away from the printed copies being available through the likes of eBay.
