Burgos: Minority candidates left wondering: What are MLB GMs looking for?

Dusty Baker got a managerial post last week , raising the number of African-American managers in MLB back to 1.
The plot twists in the Nationals’ hiring Baker is worthy of a telenovela. This wasn’t the first time Baker was in the running for the Washington job, and it wasn’t the first time he was their second choice.
In the days before Baker’s hire, the Nats had offered the managerial position to former Padres manager Bud Black. Apparently the Nats gave Black an offer he could refuse, and so he did.
Black, who is white, is not desperate for a managerial job. In all likelihood, you won’t hear about him having to cold-call major league teams to ask for an interview for their managerial post — like Baker has done, more than once.
