Burns: Plans to rehab Hamtramck Negro Leagues ballpark taking shape

Officials are making moves toward a plan to renovate the historic Hamtramck Stadium, a still-standing relic from a past when sports were segregated by race.
Hamtramck hired Smith Group JJR for $76,900-plus to create a pre-development plan as a precursor to any construction, city planners announced Monday.
Hamtramck received a $50,000 National Parks Service African American Civil Rights grant to offset the bulk of the cost.
"So the grant from the National Park Service was capped out at $50,000," Hamtramck City Planner Melanie Markowicz said at the latest Transition Advisory Board meeting, when the contract was approved. "However, for what we're asking for ... it was going to cost more than $50,000 and all the bids came in more than $50,000.
