D’Addona: 80 years ago Martin Dihigo did something never accomplished in baseball

Eighty years ago something absolutely astonishing happened in baseball — something that had never happened, hasn’t happened since and something that sealed the legendary status of one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

Unfortunately, it is also something that virtually no one knows happened because it happened in the Mexican League, and happened to Martin Dihigo, arguably the greatest player in baseball history — and definitely the most under appreciated player in baseball history.

On Sept. 5, 1938, Dihigo faced off against Satchel Paige on the mound, Dihigo pitching for Aguila of Veracruz and Paige on the mound for Agrario of Mexico City with the pennant on the line.

These two Negro Leagues legends were two of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game. Attention around the Americas was on this game, though it was quickly forgotten in the U.S.
