Deane: Trouble with ‘The Curve’

This is not exactly a timely book review; Brian Kenny’s Ahead of the Curve was published by Simon & Schuster in 2016. According to the book jacket, the author “wants to reshape the way we think about baseball. The biggest proponent of sport analytics in the baseball media, Kenny says that groupthink and tradition are standing in the way of smarter, better baseball.”
Let me first say that I like Brian Kenny. I have met him multiple times, and was once a guest (via telephone) on his Clubhouse Confidential TV show. I enjoy hearing Kenny’s daily insight on the MLB Network. Unlike most of us who have been espousing Sabermetrics for decades, he has a way of discussing modern metrics and baseball thinking in a way that is enlightening without being pedantic or disrespectful to the less-enlightened. And his book is readable and thought-provoking.
