Ferkovich: The Tigers’ 35-5 start in 1984

The next time your favorite baseball team puts up a poor record in spring training, look no further than the remarkable 1984 Detroit Tigers for hope and solace.

The club stumbled and bumbled its way up and down Florida to the tune of an 11–18 Grapefruit League mark. Meanwhile, back in the Motor City, fans spent most of March scratching their heads.

Many of them still remembered the words that Manager Sparky Anderson uttered soon after he rolled into town with his championship pedigree in June 1979. If he could not deliver a World Series winner within five years, Sparky proclaimed, he would deserve to be fired. Well, 1984 was to be his fifth full season at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull. Would his team finally deliver?
