Former Pirates Skipper Danny Murtaugh Focus of Authors
Former Pirates manager Murtaugh is focus of authors at Hall of Fame program.From the Baseball Hall of Fame on September 2, 2010:
(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – Three separate times, Danny Murtaugh walked away from his job as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In each case, his love for baseball brought him back to the dugout. And in each case, Murtaugh showcased his skills as one of baseball’s most successful managers.
Murtaugh’s story is told in Colleen Hroncich’s book The Whistling Irishman: Danny Murtaugh Remembered. On Friday, Sept. 3, Hroncich will discuss her new book at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as part of the Museum’s continuing Authors’ Series program.
Hroncich, Murtaugh’s granddaughter, tells the story of how Murtaugh climbed up through poverty to become a two-time World Series champion as Pittsburgh’s manager. Murtaugh skippered the Pirates four separate times (1957-64, 1967, 1970-71 and 1973-76), often leaving his position for health reasons but quickly returning. He finished his 15-year managerial career with a record of 1,115-950, including five postseason appearances and two World Series championships.
The 1 p.m. Sept. 3 program will be held in the Museum’s Bullpen Theater and a book signing will follow, with copies of the book available in the Museum Bookstore. The program is included with regular Museum admission.
The Hall of Fame’s Authors’ Series program brings noted writers to the Hall of Fame’s Bullpen Theater for special lectures as fans can hear first-hand how their stories became part of written history. These educational presentations allow visitors to learn the story behind the stories.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. From Memorial Day through the day before Labor Day, the Museum is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. The Museum observes regular hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend.
