Gaul: Doxsie’s book uncovers Iowa baseball greats

Don Doxsie realized as he was reporting about former baseball player Gene Baker being voted into the Quad-Cities Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 that there was much more to Baker’s story than he could fit into the newspaper.

Doxsie, longtime sports writer and editor at the Quad-City Times, squirreled away the extra information in the back of his head and went on with his job of daily writing and editing.

Through the years, as he ran into, or heard about, other Iowa baseball greats, he tucked away that information, too.

Next to Baker, a Davenport native who, because of his race, languished in the minor leagues for years before the Chicago Cubs summoned the courage to bring him up to the majors, Doxsie added other stories.
