Kaplan: The Bookshelf conversation with Mark Armour

Now that we’ve come to the end of the season, we can see who the geniuses and pretenders are. On the one end, you have Theo Epstein, who may be on the verge of taking another team that had gone decades in the doldrums — the Chicago Cubs — to the World’s Championship, just as he had done with the Boston Red Sox.
On the other hand, you have Farhan Zaidi and the Los Angeles Dodgers, who has managed to have the highest payroll with relatively little to show for it.
Micheal Lewis published Moneyball in 2003. Since then there have been several books looking into what it takes to put together a team that can compete both on the field and in the ledger. One of the most recent and thorough of this new genre is In Pursuit of Pennants: Baseball Operations from Deadball to Moneyball
by Mark Armour and Dan Levitt. I spoke with Armour recently about this joint venture.
