Kim: Why baseball broadcasts can be an effective tool for learning English

On Oct.​ 17, 2000, 10-year-old Ivo Felipe stayed​ up​ well past his​ bedtime on​ a school night —​ and​ risked​​ getting yelled at by his parents — to watch Game 6 of the American League Championship Series between the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners.

Unlike most others who tuned into the game, Felipe was watching from almost 5,000 miles away in his hometown of São Paulo, Brazil.

“Usually, October baseball was harder (to watch) because the time difference grows to three hours in Brazil,” Felipe told The Athletic, “and that meant I was awake as late as 2 in the morning.”

Despite growing up in a country dominated by its love of soccer, Felipe fell in love with baseball during the Yankee dynasty era of the late ’90s, when ESPN began broadcasting Major League Baseball in Brazil. “It has been my favorite team since then,” Felipe said.
