Mains: The best of Chris Sale

From SABR member Rob Mains at Baseball Prospectus on August 13, 2019:

Chris Sale has been, let’s say, inconsistent this year. Thursday he pitched one of his best games of the season, limiting the Angels to two hits and no walks while striking out 13 over eight shutout innings. But the gem raised his record to only 6-11 and lowered his ERA to only 4.41.

Until Thursday, his season was a story of three stretches.

Clearly, something that was right in that middle stretch was wrong in the other two.

Yes, I know, his velocity was down at the beginning of the year but it’s come back. And sure, his peripherals in the last stretch haven’t been awful, at least not the strikeouts walks. (Not shown: 2.0 HR/9. That is awful.)
