Mains: The open-source hit-by-pitch database

I am a little obsessed by batters getting hit by pitches. I’ve written about the topic here more than once. My essay in this year’s Annual (still available and makes for great shelter-in-place reading in lieu of baseball!) is focused on HBPs. The teaser is that batters in 2020 were hit more frequently than at any time in modern baseball history, and I looked into the reasons why.

I thought it might be interesting to look at hit by pitches more broadly. My brilliant BP colleagues Lucas Apostoleris and Robert Au created a database of every hit by pitch in the divisional play era, 1969-2019.
