Megdal: Gardy-metrics in Detroit

It may not surprise you to hear that the Tigers held a meeting earlier this month to go over data provided by their analytics department.

But for those who have tracked the career of manager Ron Gardenhire, finding him at the center of the action is a bit of a surprise. When the Tigers hired Gardenhire as their next manager in 2017, he said all the right things about embracing cutting-edge statistical data. Skeptics wondered if he meant it and, days before his 60th birthday, if Gardenhire was prepared to alter his approach.

Now in his second full season at the helm, it’s clear that he wasn’t kidding and that his time with the Diamondbacks as bench coach, or even reflecting on what could have gone better during his long stint managing the Twins, means embracing everything that can help his Tigers win.
