Megdal: Q&A with SABR Vice President Leslie Heaphy on women in baseball

EXCELLE SPORTS: For the uninitiated: what is the Women in Baseball Committee at Society for American Baseball Research, and how did you get involved?

HEAPHY: The committee is one of nearly 30 research committees under the umbrella of the society for American Baseball Research (SABR) which anyone can join. The committee is interested in researching and documenting all aspects of women’s involvement in baseball – ie. Players, owners, writers, umpires, groundskeepers, managers etc… I joined SABR when I was working on my Master’s thesis involving the history of the Negro Leagues and then got involved with women’s baseball and took over as chair of the committee in 1995.
