Michigan star athlete, SABR member Don Lund dies at 90

Don Lund, a three-sport varsity athlete at the University of Michigan in the 1940s, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday at the age of 90.
Lund, who earned three letters each in football, baseball and basketball at Michigan, was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1945 by the Chicago Bears. Lund, however, decided to pursue an MLB career.
Lund, an outfielder, played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, St. Louis Browns and Detroit Tigers from 1945-54.
He returned to Ann Arbor and was Michigan’s baseball coach from 1959-62, with a record of 83-55-3. Lund’s 1961 team won the Big Ten championship and his 1962 squad won the national championship.
Lund worked in the Tigers’ front office from 1963-70, then returned to U-M, where he served as an assistant athletic director from 1970 to his retirement in 1992.
Lund was born in Detroit in 1923 and graduated from Detroit Southeastern High School.
