Rosenthal: MLB’s sign-stealing investigation should not stop at the Astros

The first sentence of our initial story about the Astros and sign stealing said, There is a broad story about this era of baseball that has yet to be told.

A major-league manager told us, “It’s an issue that permeates throughout the league.” And even before mentioning the Astros, Evan Drellich and I wrote, “Electronic sign stealing is not a single-team issue.”

The story, which detailed how the Astros stole signs electronically during the 2017 season in violation of major-league rules, prompted an investigation by Major League Baseball.

Yet, in addressing reporters before the start of the owners’ meetings Tuesday, commissioner Rob Manfred said, “I’m not going to speculate on whether other people are going to be involved. We’ll deal with that when it happens. I have no reason to believe it extends beyond the Astros at this point in time.”

If that is the case, baseball needs to keep digging.
