SABR Member Benefit Spotlight: Email Discussion Forums
JANUARY 24, 2024 — As a SABR member, you have vast resources and benefits at your disposal. With so much information at your fingertips, we realize it can be overwhelming to absorb it all! To highlight key benefits, read on for a SABR Member Benefit Spotlight, an email series that identifies and explains some of the most valuable features of your membership. We hope this allows you to take full advantage of all SABR has to offer.
Today’s issue shows you how to connect with fellow SABR members through email discussion forums.
EMAIL DISCUSSION FORUMS
A large part of your SABR membership is connecting with other members through baseball fellowship and discussion. One way to do that is by utilizing our members-only discussion forums through Groups.io and SABR-L. While Groups.io allows for posts among chapters and specific research committees, SABR-L is an open listserv across all participants. Any SABR member can subscribe. If you have a question about any baseball research topic, or are looking for assistance or answers on anything baseball-related, posting your query to one of our email lists is a quick, convenient way to find an answer.
Messages will be delivered straight to your email inbox, either individually or as a daily digest. You can post your own questions or reply to anyone else’s messages directly from your own email account. See below for instructions on how to access SABR-L or our Groups.io forums.
Groups.io Email Forums
All SABR members are eligible to subscribe to and participate in any of our email discussion forums. (If your chapter or committee wishes to create a new email forum, please contact Jacob Pomrenke for details.)
- Click here to access the SABRgroups page. Select the name of the individual subgroup (such as Baseball Records, Minor Leagues, or Black Sox Scandal) that you want to join.
- Look for the section labeled Group Email Addresses.
- Highlight the Subscribe address to copy it, then compose a new (blank) message from your email account to that address.
- You will receive an email with a confirmation link to join the group. Follow the instructions in your email to confirm.
- Once you confirm your subscription, you can then send messages to any SABRgroups discussion forum for which you’re subscribed by composing a message and sending it to the Post address at the top, or by replying to any messages you receive.
Your SABR membership also gives you access to view the online archives of any discussion groups for which you’re subscribed. To view the group archives online:
- Click here for a list of Your Groups, and then select the Log In button at the top-right.
- If this is your first time logging in to view the archives at SABRgroups.org, you will see a one-time setup screen to verify your SABR membership. Click the Submit button to continue.
- You will then see a list of all the discussion forums to which you belong. Select any group to view the message archives, plus any photos or downloadable files that have been added to the group.
Subscribing to SABR-L
The SABR-L email list is a moderated forum which encourages and facilitates research and information exchange among SABR members.
To sign up for SABR-L, send a message from your primary email account to the address LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. In the body of the message (NOT the subject line), type:
SUBSCRIBE SABR-L Firstname Lastname
using your name in place of ‘Firstname Lastname’. Your request will be forwarded to the list maintainer, who, after verifying your SABR membership, will add you to the list.
