Sarris: Joey Votto on hitting strategy and what he’s lost

From SABR member Eno Sarris at The Athletic on March 12, 2019:

Eno Sarris: I hit in front of the machines. I have a whopping 63 mph max exit velocity.

Joey Votto: (laughs) If we ever hit in front of machines, we are so frigging amped up, you’re not in the same frame of mind.

Sarris: Oh, because you want the best numbers. Your best.

Votto: You may not have been in the right frame of mind. If I’d gone out and thrown today, where you were mentally, I might have been in the same range.

Sarris: No! I did try psyche myself up and jump around, and I wanted to do my best.

Votto: No, you don’t understand where we get to.

Sarris: Like the difference in energy between a spring training game and a regular season game?

Votto: You can’t imagine, where you have to get to in order to be really good at this. Otherwise, we’d all look terrible. Your numbers, what are you going to do.
