Sawyers: Bronze statue of Lefty Grove will stand in Lonaconing

An enthusiastic, but cautious man, Bucky Schriver on Wednesday finally said it:

“The Lefty Grove bronze statue will be erected in downtown Lonaconing.”

Two years ago, Schriver began campaigning for the late Robert Moses “Lefty” Grove, the 6-foot, 3-inch Lonaconing native who was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame and who many of the sport’s aficionados believe to be the best southpaw to ever toe a rubber on a pitching mound.

Lefty’s accomplishments are remarkable, Schriver reasoned.

Grove’s legacy needs to be cast in bronze, he told others.
