Simon: The Cardinals are riding their defense into the wild-card race

The Cardinals have made a run back into the wild-card race — and they’re doing much of it with defense.
They have 33 Defensive Runs Saved since July 25, tied with the Diamondbacks for the most in the majors in that span. They had 16 all season prior to that.
What makes the Cardinals interesting is that they’ve done it the traditional way. They’re among the least frequent users of defensive shifts in baseball.
So how have they done it?
